Spelling Bee

Spelling is Strong at Sanford Schools

Ten Sanford students ranging in grades 6th-8th competed at the Regional Spelling Bee at Adams State University on Wednesday, February 5, 2020.

Sanford had an excellent showing and swept the bee by winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Cienna Daniels won 1st place, Holly McDaniel took 2nd place, and Isabella Peterson took 3rd place.

Sanford was one of five schools that competed. Other schools were Center, Sierra Grande, Alamosa, and Centauri. All of the schools competed well and had strong showings. Hopefully, more schools will be involved next year.

The spelling bee is a great opportunity for students. It encourages them to study spelling and to prepare for a competitive event.  It teaches them how to work under pressure and how to perform with grace and calmness during stressful circumstances.

Dena Jaminet, elementary principal, said, “Sanford Elementary was well represented at the Regional Spelling Bee.  With spellcheck, learning to spell has become a lost art.  I am glad that Sanford Elementary still puts an emphasis on the skill of spelling.  We had multiple students attend the Spelling Bee, and they all did very well.  One of the 6th grade students took home 3rd place.  We will be hosting again next year since Cienna Daniels was the Spelling Bee champion.”

Cienna Daniels will compete at the State Spelling Bee on March 14th, 2020, at the University of Denver Campus. Congratulations to all Spelling Bee participants and good luck to Cienna at state!
