Junior Carnival

On Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011, the junior class held the annual Junior Carnival. The traditional festivity included a cake walk, face painting, a fish pond, a ping pong fish toss, a fortune teller, a football throw, a basketball shoot, calf roping, and darts. New to the stage this year was a tattoo booth, wheelchair races, horseshoes, beanbag toss, and the highlight was a mechanical bull. Students enjoyed popcorn, cotton candy, and suck-ers, too. Kids were running around with tiger faces, Spiderman faces, and the like, all the while clinging to their trinkets and fish. This was a great way to set the mood for Thanksgiving Break. A piñata raffle was held prior to the carnival, and the winning class was drawn at the carnival. The fourth grade class won the piñata and a bag of candy for the individual who purchased the most tickets for the fourth grade class to win. They were able to break the piñata at their leisure. Overall, the Junior Carnival was a smashing success. Thanks to anyone who helped make this great activity possible.

Delete Digital Drama

Kelli Canty and Nicole Salazar, as part of their NHS and FCCLA projects, helped Sanford students Delete Digital Drama. The goal of their project was to create awareness about cyber bullying and electronic harassment, a rising problem in today‘s society. For their project, the two had very much planned. Although their project was focused mainly for secondary students, they involved the elementary as well. The girls gave a higher elementary teachers a lesson plan about how to stop cyber bullying and what to do if one ever encounters the issue. The younger elementary students received different coloring pictures of cyber bullying awareness. The majority of their time was spent either passing out candy that tied a phrase to each day of the week to the secondary students as well as presenting to the students. Their project was a week-long extravaganza consisting of four different themed days. Monday was: Don‘t Chews Digital Drama. The girls passed out pieces of bubble gum to each secondary student and staff member. Tuesday‘s theme was: Digital Drama is Twisted. On Tuesday Twizzlers were passed out. On Wednesday the girls passed out Smarties as part of, Be a Smartie. Delete Digital Drama. Thursday was the final day of Delete Digital Drama Week. During the day the girls presented different slide shows and videos to each secondary class. Canty and Salazar also handed out their final pieces of candy tagged, Be a Lifesaver and Delete Digital Drama. Delete Digital Drama Week, although a huge part of their project, was not the only thing the girls had in mind. Canty and Salazar will write to the senator of Colorado to try to get cyber bullying and electronic harassment laws passed in the state of Colorado. Colorado is one of the 42 states that does not have these laws. They also sold t-shirts and donated some of the proceeds to the National Bullying Prevention Center in Minnesota. Overall, the project was a huge success, and the two girls hope that by doing this project, many people will become aware of the dangers that are behind cyber bullying. The two also encourage eve-ryone to Delete Digital Drama! Good work girls!

Elementary Curriculum

cmsOur elementary school is committed to provide students with a sound curriculum and varied opportunities to learn and grow.  Currently, we use the McGraw-Hill series to support our language program; and the Saxon Math as our primary resource for math.  New this 2010-2011 school year is the use of the NWEA MAP test given to all students in the fall, winter, and spring.  Through the MAP test we will be able to evaluate every student’s progress in Reading, Language, Math, and Science skills.  Kindergarten through 3rd will also use the DIBELS assessment for reading.   In addition, our students take the Star reading test which indicates an appropriate independent reading level for the Accelerated Reading program.  Our students are also challenged in math as they complete Accelerated Math objectives.

The district preschool runs alongside our regular school system.  Two sessions are offered daily.  We use the newly adopted “Teaching Strategies GOLD” system that is a dynamic preschool curriculum and assessment program.

Our school district's commitment to excellence is evident in the pride that is portrayed by students and community alike. We invite visitors to see what opportunities await in a school district that defines excellence.
