Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon Week, October 25th-28th, was a total success, and everyone had a ton of fun. During this nationwide act against drug use/abuse, Sanford students completed several different activities to gain awareness. On Monday, everyone received bracelets, dog-tags, or the like, to kick off the week’s events. Monday was Hugs not Drugs Day. Kids brought their stuffed animals to school. Tuesday was Wear Red and Pledge Day. The hallways were filled with red participants. Wednesday was Crazy Socks and Ties Day, and Thursday was Halloween Dress-up Day—Spook Away Drugs. During the week there was a coloring contest and a poster contest. The winners for the coloring contest were: preschool-Sedona Larson, kindergarten-Kaeo Hoffman, first grade-Josie Peterson, and second grade-Terese Chavez. The winners for the poster contest were: Fourth grade-Brieanna Crowther, fifth grade-Kieanna Salazar, and sixth grade-Kersten Faucette. Coloring and poster contest winners each received a bundle of pencils. 1st and 6th grades won the Dress-up Days Contest. First graders received suckers and bookmarks as prizes, and sixth grade got bookmarks and juice as prizes. Drug Free Presentations were given on Thursday, October 28, to all elementary classes. Student Council members visited each elementary classroom for 20-25 minutes. They completed a workbook with the students concerning anti-drug use/abuse. All elementary participants received candy. The high school students enjoyed a visit from Colorado State Patrolman, Trooper Benavides. He discussed responsibility and the law’s view on drug/tobacco/alcohol use. It was a very moving assembly. Everyone in the entire school was allowed the opportunity to pledge to be drug-free. The pledge banner is still intact on the wall across from the library. Come in and check it out! We hope that everyone gained in some manner or another from this awareness week.

Read Across America Day
Our Read Across America Day on Wednesday, March 2nd, was also highly successful. My students loved going into the elementary classrooms and promoting reading. All elementary students received diplomas, stickers, bookmarks, and suckers. Hopefully, they all enjoyed reading some of Dr. Seuss’s stories, too. Reading is the number one way for overall intelligence to grow. Remember: “You’re never too crazy, too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” JUST READ!
Constitution Day
We celebrated Constitution Day Thursday, September 16, 2010. Many of the elementary students participated in a competitive red/white/blue dress up day! Many junior high and high school students and staff members also dressed up. Both kindergarten classes and the sixth grade class won the contest with their remarkable patriotic attire. They were rewarded with a popsicle party on Thursday, 9/30. Student Council also challenged the fifth and sixth grade classes to write essays about what The Constitution of The United States means to them. Several students participated in the challenge and did an excellent job. The winners were: Kirsten Faucette and Chad Crowther. They received Starbursts as prizes.
Throughout the day Student Council members visited elementary and preschool students to provide an educational experience by sharing facts and playing games to learn about the importance of the Constitution of the United States. As Student Council members visited each class, it was very apparent that the students had been taught a great amount of American History! Each class received a class gift: a beach ball or a BIG/light-up pen. All of the student participants seemed to really enjoy to the opportunity to learn and celebrate our country and our rights and liberties. Constitution Day was a great success and a wonderful way to commemorate the creation and signing of The Constitution of The United States.
Fall Student Council News
Student Council is once again working hard for and to thank others. This will be put into action the week of October 25th through the 28th, when we will institute Red Ribbon Week (Drug-Free Week). In order to get into the groove of Red Ribbon Week, we will give out various drug-free paraphernalia such as bracelets, dog tags, etc., to ALL students, staff, and faculty, sponsor dress up days, present all elementary classes with drug-free awareness curriculum, and provide the elementary classes with drug-free contests (poster and coloring) in which one winner from each class will be chosen and presented an award. The class that has the most dress-up participation will win an ice-cream party. Also, we hope to be privileged to have a helicopter visit our school during one of these days. The helicopter crew typically presents a “You can do anything you want” attitude through various activities.
We are also busy prepping for Hats on Day. This nationally renowned noteworthy activity is awesome. Anyone who wants to help support children with cancer donates a minimum of $1.00 to wear a hat all day. The hat is symbolic to show sympathy for those who wear hats in order to cover hair loss due to cancer. Hats On Day is scheduled for Wednesday, November 17th. All proceeds will be donated to The Foundation for Children With Cancer.
Our recycling program is off and running. Mrs. Forster’s first grade class is in the lead with six bags turned in. No other elementary class has recycled as of yet. Way to go first graders! The class with the most recycled aluminum cans will receive a pizza party on Earth Day in April. All monies gained from recycling will be donated to our local Habitat for Humanity. This noteworthy cause has greatly helped many people.
