FFA News

Sanford‟s FFA Chapter was very well represented at the Colorado State FFA Convention this summer in Alamosa, Colorado. The chapter had representatives compete in many interesting and challenging events. Bailee Canty, Tara Crowther, and Kevin Crowther competed in the FFA Quiz Bowl Competition. Quiz Bowl is a competition quiz-zing first year FFA members on their knowledge of FFA and agriculture. The Sanford trio received silver in this competi-tion, falling short in the semifinal round. Yvette Christensen-Norris competed in the FFA Creed Speaking Contest. In the Creed Speaking Contest members must recite the FFA Creed without note cards, papers, or any remind-ers. Yvette received a bronze medal. Kelli Canty competed in the Prepared Public Speak-ing Contest. This contest requires members to research a controversial agriculture issue and present a six-to-eight minute speech on that particular issue. Kelli received a bronze medal in this event. Student participants not only competed, they attended various open sessions where they learned about FFA, agriculture, etc. They also had a blast playing in a volleyball tournament. Overall, the convention was a very educational and successful experience for all of the attendees. Way to go Sanford FFA!

Winter FFA News

On October 23, 2010, our FFA Chapter went to the Dicaperl Minerals Corp. perlite mine in New Mexico to do one of our chapter service projects; we planted 2,400 trees that day. We were unable to plant the desired amount that day, so several members returned to the mine on the 29th of October to finish planting 300 trees. Over the period of two days, we planted 2,700 trees. Alan Norris, with Dicapearl Mineral Corp., made the offer to our chapter. He offered us the opportunity to plant the trees, and in return, his company would give our chapter $3,000 dollars. Our pur-pose for going was to reforest the inactive mine. We planted several types of trees including Ponderosa Pine, Pinion, and Juniper. These type of trees grow best in the conditions they are in since the mine used a lot of perlite while it was active. The money that our chapter raised is going to be used to really get our chapter started. In December our chapter will be participating in the SLV FFA District Speaking Competi-tion at ASC. Students will compete in quiz bowl, parliamentary procedure, extemporaneous speaking, and prepared speech. Student who win their events will represent our SLV FFA District at the Colorado State FFA Convention in June that will be held at Adams State College.

Fall FFA News

Our FFA chapter attended the State Convention in Craig, Colorado, the 7th, 8th, and 9th of June. At the convention we had the opportunity to see the current state FFA officers give their retiring addresses, see the new officers be installed, listen to very inspiring speakers, and participate in workshops and activities that helped us get to know the FFA chapters in our state better.

This school year we have a new officer team. Jon Morgan is the president; Tommy Caldon is the vice-president; and Cameron Crowther is serving as the chapter sentinel. Jerrica Barr is the treasurer; Morgan Neese is the secretary; and Kelli Canty serves as the chapter reporter.

At the San Luis Valley Fair, the Alamosa FFA Alumni put on the FFA Blue and Gold Showmanship. The showmanship consisted of four showmanship events: sheep, goats, swine, and cattle. Current FFA members and members wanting to join FFA are welcome to do so. It is an annual event.

Back To School FFA News

Our FFA chapter has been involved in many activities since the beginning of the school year. The freshmen members, along with Mr. Sinclair and Mr. Canty, attended the B.I.G. (Becoming Involved as a Green-hand) Conference.

Also, three of our chapter members attended the San Luis Valley District Nominating Session. Tommy Caldon was on the nominating committee that voted on who the district officers were to be. Kylan Reynolds and Jessica Sowards ran for district offices while at the session. Kylan is now the San Luis Valley District Secretary, and Jessica is the District Sentinel.

We would like to thank all of those who supported the DJs fundraiser we, as a club, did. Your help and support is greatly appreciated and recognized! During the month of October, see any FFA member if you would like to save $20.00 on a ton of Crystallex products; we will give the coupons to you as soon as we receive them. Also, if anyone is interested in buying fruit, during the month of November we will be selling it. In previous years the fruit has been greatly worth it.

On September 20th and 21st, several members of our chapter attended the Hesperus Leadership Conference in Hesperus, Colorado.  Although the conference was primarily for the Southwest District, they invited any members/chapters from the San Luis Valley District to come and enjoy the leadership sessions. While there, the members participated in leadership sessions that allowed them to focus on the following: character, opportunities, and learning.  The leadership session was believed to have greatly improved the leadership skills of those in attendance.
