As a FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America) project, Kelli Canty, Nicole Salazar, and Taten Koenig held a Kids’ Health Fair on January 29th, 2011. The health fair was to help inform children and adults about different safety and family issues that they may face on a day-to-day basis. The Kids’ Health Fair consisted of many informational as well as fun booths that allowed both age groups engagement. Several booths were hosted by FCCLA members and many community professionals such as nurses from the SLV Regional Medical Center, and Conejos County Health Nurse. Topics such as diabetes, autism, milk, hand-washing, and many other presentations were addressed. Although the project was meant to be about informing, the group thought it would be a good idea to have an incentive for participating. A Wii sport game package including the consol, the remotes, and the Wii sport game, a Wii Fitness board, and a Wii game were the “grand prizes” of the event. The three were raffled off at the end of the Kids’ Health Fair to all who came to the fair. Judd Embry, Treston Embry, and Kirsten Faucette were the three winners of the prizes. The health fair was well attended, and attendees spoke very highly of it when finished. Everyone left with goodie bags and recipes to help remember the information they learned at the Kids’ Health Fair. The Sanford FCCLA Chapter is hoping to have another health fair next year due to the great turn out at the fair this year. Kelli, Nicole, and Taten would like to thank everyone who participated in and helped with the success of their FCCLA project and Kids’ Health Fair! If you have any suggestions for the health fair next year, they are more than welcomed by the chapter.
Twenty-two members of FCCLA will attend the FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Denver on April 7th-9th to compete in the STAR Events. Our students will represent our school and community very well with service projects that range from sponsoring the Kids’ Health Fair to the Food Innovations Event. Also, Stetson Edgar will advance to the next stage of becoming a State Officer. He will give a one- minute prop speech to over 1,200 fellow FCCLA members. He will also be interviewed by a panel of judges. We wish Stetson and all of the students our best at State Competitions. The highest gold winner of each event will compete at the national level during July in California.
