Fashion Contstuction

My name is Brianna Renner, and I am doing Fashion Construction for my STAR Event competition. This is my first year in FCCLA, and so far, I love it. What happens in this event is the person makes an outfit using skills learned in Family and Consumer Sciences courses.  The garment has to dress both the upper and lower body of a child or adult and use at least eight fashion construction techniques.   The outfit I am making is a blue gathered skirt and a white button-up shirt. This project takes a lot of work and time, but if I could choose again, it would still be my first choice.

Community Project

For our FCCLA project we decided to complete a community project. We bought and designed personalized pillow cases for each of the residents at the Rio Grande Inn Nursing Home. Many elderly people in nursing homes do not receive very many visitors. We felt that these people deserved to be thanked for building our future. They were our early community leaders. On Saturday, January 15, 2010, we delivered each special gift to the residents.  As we took the pillow cases around, we visited with many of the residents. Their faces were filled with joy as we personally gave them their pillow cases. Through this project, we have developed long-lasting friendships with many of these elderly people. We have learned much through this project and now have a greater appreciation for the older generation.

Focus on the Children

Our FCCLA Star Event was “Focus on the Children.” For this event we decided to focus on children’s safety. On January 11th we presented a slideshow to the 3rd and 4th grade classes about different types of safety.  Play it Safe, Stranger Danger, Street Smarts, and Fire Safety were the main topics of our presentation. The children really seemed to enjoy the slideshow and really got into the question and answer part of the presentation. After the presentation, we handed out a coloring page for a coloring contest based on our safety categories.  We picked up the coloring pages, selected the winners, and gave out awards on January 20th.  We will give our presentation at our School’s Health Fair on January 29th. We hope that through our presentations we have helped the children to identify and avoid hazardous situations.
